They left on Sunday for a 1-week basic course at Lackland AF Base, San Antonio, Texas. Aft er basic, Airman Zborek will at tend Technical School for Elec tronics, and Airman Downing will attend Technical School for Ad ministration. Airman Zborek is married to the former Marcia Jean Nieppetter and both young men attended Centralia Jr. Col lege. TSgt. Ray Lamperez, local Air Force Recruiter, states that di rect commissions are now avail able to college graduates, and that those enrolled in their senior year may apply. The Aviation Cadet Program is still open to applicants who has completed 2 years of college. Staff Sergeant Charles R. Haynes of Salem, Ill., is now serving with the 341st Strategic Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB, Mont., the unit which mans the Air Force’s first combat-ready Minuteman missile complex. Airman Haynes, a fire protection specialist, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin M. Haynes, 508 S. Broadway, Salem. He and his wife, the former Greta M. Cox of Oxford, England, have two children. A graduate of Salem Community High School, he re the service in December 1952, Roy H. Pennington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pennington of Odin began recruit training, Sept. 11, at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, N. HICKAM AFB, Hawaii— Carl E. Sanders of Salem, Il., has been promoted to airman first class in the United States Air Force. Airman Sanders is assigned to the 1502nd Air Transport Wing here as a personnel specialist. He en tered the service in 1960. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Burl Sanders of 305 E. Blair St., Salem, he is a graduate of Salem Com munity High School. GRAFENWOHR, Germany (AH TNC) — Army Pvt. Jesse L Geibe, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Geibe, Route 4, Iuka, Il., recently completed eight weeks of intensive field training with other members of the 4th Armored Division at the Seventh Army Training Area in Grafenwehr, Germany. The training included day and night tactical exercises emphasiz ing mobility and chemical, bio logical and radiological warfare. An essential part of the training is range firing of individual and crew-served weapons including the Army’s new M-60 machinegun and the 105 and 120-millimeter tank guns. The 4th, a major element of NAT O forces in Europe, plays an es sential role in maintaining world peace. Geibe, a combat engineer in Com pany A of the division’s 24th Engi neer Battalion in Forth, entered the Army in December 1961, com pleted basic training at Fort Leon ard Wood, Mo., and arrived over seas last May. He is a 1956 graduate of Salem Community High School. Airman 2/c David M. Powless, son of Mrs. Annabelle Tate and Leon Powless of Salem, has been promoted to Air effective Oct. 1. He is asigned to the 551st Air Po lice Squadron, Otis A.F.B., Mass. David enlisted in the Air Force in August, 1960 after graduating from Salem Community High School in June that year. Mr. W T. Richardson, and other relatives and friends. The Rev. and Mrs. Forrest Crouch, Mrs. Ruth Deadmond and Mrs. Gussie Lee, toured Southern Illinois Thursday going to Giant City State Park, Bald Knob, Wy cliff, Ky., and on into Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fairchild and Mr. and Mrs. Leland Jackson visited in Waltonville Sunday.
