NEW YORK (UPI) — Tail fins are gone from cars because they've served their purpose, a top automotive stylist said Tues day night Virgil M. Exner, vice president and director of styling for Chrys ler Corp., said he eliminated fins from his firm's cars this year be cause they've outlived their useful ness as a styling symbol “AS an accent,” he said, “the fins served their purpose. They have our cars a visible difference” and aren't needed any more As for the future, he said, you won't see as much glass on wind shields and back windows as in the past “There will be a recession in g lass in cars,” he said, “until glass of some other clear sub stance can be developed to more completely reflect the sun's my rays and eliminate We've had complaints about flare,” he added, “And we will have to use less glass in wind shields until we find a way to eliminate it.” But, he said, there probably ‘will be more glass in ‘side win dows of cars because stylists will try to lower the “beltlines” and thus give autos a longer, fuller and more graceful appearance. Exner made the remarks at dinner of the Society of Ilustr ors where he received a styling award for designing the new 1962 Valient Signet 200, a sports-type compact car with a fancy interior.
