DAVIS IS DEADPassed Away at Late Hour t1 Tuesday Night.DIED FROM PNEUMONIAWas Helpmate and Companion of the President of the Confederacy.Now York, Oct. lil.— Mrs, Varina Jefferson Davis, widow ofthe President of the Cwho had been ill fora week at theHotel Majestic, in this city, diedat 10:25 o’clock tonight, at the age of 80 years.Death was due to pneumonia, induced by a severe cold, which Mrs. Davis contracted upon her return from the Adirondack^, where she had spent the summer months. Although grave fears were felt from the first, Mrs. Davis’ wonderful vitality, which brought her safely through a similar attack a year ago, gave hope of ultimate recovery until night, when a decided change for the worse was evident, ami the attending physicians announced the end near. It was then believed that Mrs. Davis could not survive the night, but she rallied slightly during the early hours of today, Shortly after? o'clock this inorti-she had a sinking spell, and Rev. Nathan A. Beagle, Rector of St. Stephen's Protestant Church, was hurriedly summoned to give religious comfort to thepatient in her last moments of conciouaness. The clergyman remained some time, and an hour later it was announced that Mrs. Davis had lapsed into a state of coma. The period of unt or.eiou*-ness continued to the end.At the bedside when death came were Mrs. J. Addison Hayes, of Newark, N. Jthe only surviving daughter of Davis: Jefferson Davis Hayes, a grandson, who ts a student at Princeton University; Mrs. Charles E. Bateson, a niece; Dr, and Mrs, Gustav Webb, the latter a granddaughter, and Dr. Robert H. Wylie, who, with Dr. Webb, cared for Mrs. Davisthroughout her illness.J. Addison Hayes, husband of Mrs. Davis’ only living child, had been summoned from Colorado Springs, and was hurrying across the continent when a message announcing Mrs. Davis’ death intercepted Mm.Mrs. Davis had her eightieth birthday on may 7th last. The late years of her life has been saddened by the loss of her daughter. Winnie, who died in September, at Narrgausett Pier.« * «
