he Western Baptist Cent composed of all the Baptist churches west of the Blue.Ridge, met in Ashe ville yesterday. ‘ A young Japanese, who had been a student’at Oak “Ridge Institute, Guilford county, since last fall, died of consumption, on the night of the. _ The New Berne Journal says Sadie Guthrie, aged‘ six years and, living about six ‘miles ‘from New’ Berne, was run over by ‘a. log. wagon last, week and killed. Four colored boys were monkeying with‘'an unloaded (?) pistol at King’s Mountain Wednesday of last week when it was discharged, killing Sam Henderson, one of the number. The gin house of Frank K. Borden, six miles from Goldsboro, was de stroyed by an accidental fire on the 10th, together with all the machinery and about 18 bales of seed cotton. Mark Phillips, a negro who was shot at a distillery in Caldwell county two months ago, died Saturday. J. A. White, the man accused of doing the shooting, surrendered and is in jail at Lenoir. Dr. W.R. Wood, superintendent of the State Hospital, at Raleigh, has tendered his resignation, to take effect December 1st. He will return to Scotland Neck, his former home, to practice medicine. Harvey Carpenter, a 15-year-old colored boy, attempted to criminally assault a 4-year-old white child near Mt. Holly, Gaston county, Monday. The child's scregms led to the boy's ae and he was taken to Dallas to jail. A cotton gin belonging to a stock company of Alliancemen, located near Franklinton, in Franklin coun ty, was burned last week, together with 40 bales of cotton. The gin house and machinery were insured for $597 and the cotton and seed for $318. Neither Senators Vance or Ransom ‘nor Gen. Longstreet was present at the Confederate veterans’ reunion at Waynesville last week, but all of them wrote letters. The Courier says the crowd on Thursday was estimated at from 3,000 to 5,000 and 280 veter ans were in line. The Charlotte Observer learns that the east-bound passenger train off the Western North Carolina Railroad was rocked near Salisbury Saturday night. Mr. John Ferree, of Randle man, was struck on the head and a wound inflicted. Several others in thhe car were struck and hurt. While Willie Hewlett, aged 17 years, was grinding a tool in a ma chine shop in Wilmington an empty wheel exploded and one of the flying pieces struck him above the right eye, inflicting a wound which extended to the top of his head and back of his ear, carrying away the scalp and badly fracturing the skull. Hawlett’s injuries are thought to be fatal. Ed. Murphy, a prize fighter, went to New Berne last week to have a sparring match with a negro. The Journal made some uncomplimentary reference to a white man’s engaging in such business with a negro, and the pugilist attacked the local ed itor of the paper, Mr. C. E. Hancock, inflicting some severe bruises. He was arrested and is now in jail under a, $300 bond. The Press and Carolinian gala Sat urday during business hours the safe of Best Co., of Hickory, was rob bed of a pocket-book containing about $1,000 in notes and accounts. It was returned in about an hour after the theft by a negro who claim ed to have found it upon the street. The night previous an unsuccessful attempt was made to enter the safe of the Novelty Woodworking Com pany, of Hickory. Major Harpar, who attended Wa tauga court, tells the Lenoir Topic that there is a regularly organized band of robbers in Watauga who have been carrying on business for some time. Eight of them are in jail at Boone, but a great many of them are still at large. They take an oath, putting both hands on the Bi ble, get down on their knees and swear that they will steal, rob, lie and will not give away any of their members, . The Durham Sun speaks of the ban quet,given at the Hotel Carrolina last Thursday evening by citizens of Durham, complimentary to Mr. Ju lian S. Carr, as a most agreeable oc casion. Mr. J.S. Manning was toast master and presented Mr. Carr with a beautiful solid silver menu. Speeches were made by Mr. Carr, Rev. Dr. BE. A. Yates, Hon. John Manning, Col. W. H. S. Burgwyn, Messrs. C. B. Grean, Geo. S. Brad Shaw and Junius Parker. _ Monday afternoon Robt. Keenan, aged 12 years and living two miles east of Asheville, was struck and killed by a bullet from Winchester life. Bart’ Justice, an employe of McIntyre’s slaughter house, was ar rested charged with firing the shot. He says he fired one shot to kill a sheep but the boy’s mother says two shots were fired but she does not know by whom as no one was in sight. The shooting is supposed to be acci dental but Justice was jailed to await the action of the coroner's jury. The Wilmington Messenger learns of a horrible murder that was committed in Washington county Wednesday afternoon of last week. Two or three walks ago a negro farm hand named Emanuel Slade had a quarrel with his wife and she left him and went to the house of her parents. On the day of the tragedy Slade went to the house where his wife was and asked her to live with him again. She refused and while she stooped over the hearth to attend to something she was cook ing, the brutal husband raised his axe and struck her a blow that sev ered the woman's head, leaving it hanging by a small piece of flesh. He struck a second blow which al most scalped the decapitated head. The murderer escaped. The Fayetteville Ofjgorcer says about 8 o'clock on the night of the lith a negro entered the store of a Mr. Mel vin, at Guray, seven miles from Fayetteville, on the Atlantic Coast Line, and called for a plug of tobac co, which was handed to him, where upon he put his hand in his pocket, presumably to get the money to pay for the tobacco, but in reality to draw a pistol which he presented at Mr. Melvin, whom he told to hand over his cash, which was done after some hesitation. A negro man who was in the back part of the store got an idea of the situation and rose to leave the building but was immedi ately shot by the desperado, whether fatally or not we could not learn. The villian, covering Mr. Kelvin with his pistol, backed out of the Store and escaped. A posse was im mediately organized and is scouring the country for the man.
