reenwich home lostin Monday night blastiThe home of Dari and Clara Walter of Star Road, Greenwich was destroyed Monday, October 10 at 7:15 p.m. as a result of what fire department officials think was a gas explosion in the basement.TJie house blew off its foundation and destroyed most of the Walter’s belongings, but only left the couple shaken and moderately burned by the blast.I According to Greenwich police, Dari Walter went to his basement searching for a gas leak and turned off the light. A spark from the light that was being shut off ignited the gas fumes and then the house exploded.When the Greenwich Fire Department responded to the scene.“the windows were blown out and the entire house was engulfed in flames,” reported Fire Chief ArthurEvans.Evans also said that his crew, assisted by the North Fairfield and Shiloh fire departments, fought the blaze for almost five hours.Walters’ clothes were burned off his back and he lost most of his hair. He suffered first and second degree burns on his back and arms. The Walters were treated and released at Mercy Hospital, Willard on Monday evening and were listed infair condition.The Walters are staying with their son, Ron, who owns and operates Village Building Supply in Greenwich.
