Carroll County’s eighth traffic fatality of the year was recorded last Thursday night when a rural Grawfordsville man, formerly of Delphi, was killed in a crash half a mile east of Burrows. Officers said the victim, Wade C. Allen, 51, of Rt. 2, Crawfords ville was traveling south on SR 25 in a 1973 pickup truck when the vehicle left the road and went down a 12-foot embankment, smashing the front end of the truck. The lights on the truck were seen by Norfolk and Western railroad crewmen, who notified authorities. Police had to search along the ditch before finding the wreck age. The victim was still alive when they found him about mid night, but died 10 minutes later. Authorities said the accident must have occurred sometime be fore 10:30 p.m. County Officer Leon Riley, Sheriff Dale McCurdy, State Troopers Larry Young and Dave Redding, Cass County Police, County Coroner James Lloyd and Deputy Coroner Clifford Bald win investigated at the scene. The body was taken to Lloyd Funeral Home. An autopsy was performed to determine cause of death, but results were not yet known at press time. Born Feb. 8, 1922, in Middles boro, Ky., Allen was the son of William and Ellen Allen. An employe of the maintenance department at Purdue University, he was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Delphi. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Allen, Rt. 2, Attica; four sons, Wayne, William, James and Raymond, all of Detroit, Mich., two daughters, Mrs. Waddell Brown, Rt. 2, Crawfordsville; and Mrs. Mary Cain, Buck Creek; one brother, William, Middlesboro; three sisters, Mrs. May Markle and Mrs. Agnes Price, both of Middlesboro; and Mrs. Edith Turner, Tazewell, Tenn.; and 15 grandchildren. Services were Monday after noon at Lloyd Funeral Home, with burial in the Masonic Cemetery. Two other accidents occurred the day before the fatality, one at 11:20 a.m. and the other at 11:20 p.m. The earlier accident occurred four miles south of Monticello on US 421. Drivers involved were Ronald A. Nelson, 30, and Paul T. O'Farrell, 40, both of Rt. 1, Delphi. Nelson, in a car, was traveling south behind O'Farrell, in a farm truck. The collision occurred when Nelson started to pass at the same time that O'Farrell attempted a left turn into a_ field, according to County Officer Doyle Clark. _ Damage was estimated at $300 to the car and $250 to the track. The second accident was 10 miles east of Delphi on Tow Path Road. Orville L. Hunt, 44, of Rt. 2, Logansport was charged with driving under the influence after he reportedly drove off the road into the ditch for about 95 feet.
