School spirit refers to that moral, physical and financial support given the student who participate in extracurricular activities by the other students. It is important because those students completing for honors for themselves and their school need the confidence and backing of their fellow students. Who should have it? Every person enrolled as a student at Peabody. We are over one thousand strong. Yet each week our bleachers are not filled to capacity with Peabody students. Our team has worked hard and envisioned many victories; that is victories supported and cheered by a loyal student body.School spirit is as much a part of our growth and development as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Let's not let the percentage of students passing in school spirit be low.. Give the Peabody Lions your support. Come to the games on Friday. Take your place in the bleachers and cheer our team on to victory.and in 1945 his family moved toPetersburg. During his 17 years Samuel has visited many of the states. Among, those are California, Arizona, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Texas.He is an active member of the Projection Crew, Dramatics Club and the 1962 Peabody yearbook staff. He has been chosen as the 3962 Senior Class President. Samuel says, “I consider it a great honor and responsibility to have been chosen President of the Senior Class ”Samuel's hobbies are hunting, fishing, driving and skin diving. He is also a model railroad enthusiast. He enjoys rock and roll, jazz and classical 'music.He plans to attend Pennsylvanr ia Slate and later become a civilengineer.red)ckrs.St.or.ofSTUDENTS HEAR DR. SAYERSDr. Frank Sayers, pastor of First Christian Church and a recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award, delivered a very dynamic and inspiring message to the student body in the Monday assembly. The topic of the address was “Are You A Champion?” Using the words and feats of great men and women, Dr. Sayers emphasized the importance of being a champion in sports, society, • speech and the spirit. Five aspects of life he considers to be most important and necessary to be a champ in any area are: A job, health in body, mind and the emotions; security; the ability to adjust to people and situations and above all, peace in the soul and with God.Dr. Sayers effectively compared life to the gridiron and emphasized that life is a game to be played with personal integrity, dynamic cooperations and t h e ability to adjust as the ultimate goals.PTA HOLDS GET-TOGETHER NIGHTThe initial meeting of the Peabody PTA was planned as a “get-together” night for parents and teachers. Business on the agenda included Cl.), The introduction of new teachers, (2.) The rental of locks for the Peabody lockers, (3.) Committee reports, (4) Parental support and supervision atfootball games and (5.) Forth coming PTA programs.Following the business meeting, a get-together affair was held in the cafeteria where refreshmnts wre served.The new officers of the PTA are: president, Dr. James Brewer; vice president, Mrs. Nellie McLeod; secretary, Mrs. Rosetta Lundy; assistant secretary, Mrs. Hester Harris; treasure!*, Dr. Granville Norris and Chaplain, Rev. Ernest Johnson.and'English.Mrs. Odessa HIdley is the other addition to our Math Department. She is a graduate of NorthCarolina AT College, She teach-, es math and science here at Peabody.In our Science Department we have Mr. Willard Johnson, p graduate of Virginia Union University. Mr. Johnson teaches Biology and general science.Mrs. Delores W. Haley, a 1954 graduate of Peabody, has returned to her alma mater to teach business education/Mrs. Haley is a graduate of Bennett College, Greensboro; North Carolina.A transfer from Blandford School to the Music Department of P'-body is Mrs. Delores R. Greene. -Mrs. Greene, a former graduate of Peabody, graduated from Virginia Slate College,Assuming duties as an industrial education teacher is Mr. Jar-ratt Rivers. Mr. Rivers formerly taught at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville.Returning to our business department after a short leave of absence is Mrs. Vivian West. These new persons are competent and capable in their chosen fields. They are as follovVs:Mr. George Walker, a graduate of Virginia Union University,' who is one of the additions to our Math Department.Miss Arlene Hairston who is a 1961 graduate of Virginia State College. She majored in physical education there. She is now in charge of the cheering squad and a teacher oE physical education.The mighty Peabody Lions jumped back from their loss to Armstrong to defeat Booker T. Washington of Norfolk 26-19. The Lions were held to a score at halftime. Sparked by quarter back Skipper Carter, halfback Walter Moore, and the Edmonds brothers. Peabody had a very productive second half scoring two touchdowns and holding the Bookers scoreless. The Lions now have a 3-1 reord. The next home game is against the Alumni on October 20.Tn ft yvvThe Baby Lions have played two games this season, losing to the Jr’s of Maggie Walker, 6-0 and tying the St. Emma Junior Varsity with a score of 6-6. Coach Davis feels that the Jr. squad needs hard work and more playing experience to reach its Ful potential, since this is the first year Peabody has had a junior varsity team.
