Fort Pierre, M.D., Oct. 10—That the flint arrowheads found in large num bers all over the western plains and the mounds, commonly accepted as the work of the redmen, were made by another race, which lived before the American Indians, is the declara tion of Dr. Charles Eastman, the edu cated Sioux Indian, who is now re naming the members of the Sioux na tion. Dr. Eastman is one of the most dis tinguished of Indian students. He scoffs the idea that the American In dians originated the flint pointed ar row of the granite and flint battle clubs and tomahawks, and_ believes most of the arrow heads found throughout the west were the work of a race which owned and roamed the hunting grounds before the Indi ans came from the east to take pos session of them. He has lived all his life, and is now a man of 40 years, as a wild Indian on the reservation of the Dakotas, and he says he has never known an Indian who could make an arrow head or who ever knew of one being made, or who knew anything of the origin of the flint points which the Indians possessed by the thousands and with which they went to battle against the white settlers and kept their wig wams supplied with game. ‘He also maintains that most so-call ed Indian burial mounds are natural formations. Several instances which have come under his personal obser vation sustains his theory shell as “old boy” when compared with another chicken that was only half out.
