E. P. Morris Writes a Letter. A TISSUE OF FALSEHOODS IN IT. A diabolical plot was brought to light on Thursday last. Copies of a weekly issue of the Telegram, published for circulation only in the cutports, were sent to Trinity Bay containing a letter over,the signature of E. P. Morris, which is a tissue of falsehood from beginning to end, and which we publish below. MORRIS’S LETTER. (Cory. ] Dean Srr.—Now that the Hon. Moses Monroe has decided to leave the’ West End for Trinity, as ap pears by last evening’s Herald, I consider the time has arrived when I should disclose, to the public one of the foulest plots ever hatched by the most unscrupulous poli tician. That plot was hatched by the Hon. Moses Monroe. In the month of March last, just after the filing of the Election Petitions, Mr. Monroe, thinking he'had the rope around the neck of Sir Wil liam Whiteway and Mr. Bond, looked around as to how he could make money for himself out of the situation. This was the plan he adopted. He sent Mr. Thomas Vavasour, one of his foremen at the Ropewalk, with the message that if I would use my influence ‘with the Government and have the bounty of $10,000 per year con tinued to the Ropewalk, he would have the election petitions against Sir William Whiteway and other members of the party withdrawn. The message was conveyed to me by Mr. Vavasour, in the presence of Cornelius Kavanagh, One of the Hands at the Ropewalk. In order that there might be no doubt as to the evidence supporting this abomin able conspiracy, I took these two men to the Honorable Robert Bond’s residence, and Mr. Vava sour there, in my presence, and again in the presence of Mr. Kava nagh, repeated to Mr. Bond Mr. Monroe’s message. It is needless to say what his answer was to a man capable of such a Piece of Trickery, injustice and cupidity. I have not made this matter public, as I was reserving it for a public meeting at St. John’s when I should have con fronted Mr. Monroe with the Man whom he had used in this vile business. Now that he has gone to Trinity, it is due to the people of that district to unmask before them the man who sought from me a renewal of this Ropewalk subsidy by ‘the betrayal of my friends. Yours, c., E. P. MORRIS St. John’s, Oct. 10th, ’94, have procured the withdrawal of one single petition, and even had the parties thereto agreed to with draw, Mr. Morris ought to be suffi cient of a lawyer to known that no judge would allow the petitions to be withdrawn until the charges therein had been enquired into. The supposition, therefore, that Mr. Monroe should offer to enter into an Agreement, where he was utterly unable to carry out his part of it, is too ab surd to ask any reasonable man to believe. Besides, it is well known that Mr. Morris’s defence, so-called, mainly consisted of abuse of Mr. Monroe, and in trying, by every possible means, to blacken him and make him nearly as bad as himself. If, therefore, there was a shadow of truth in this charge, would not Mr. Morris have only been too glad to have proved it in court? To say that he was keep ing it back as an election surprise is absurd. If there is the slightest weight in such a charge, it would have been increased a hundred fold, by having been previously proved in A Court of Justice. Mr. Morris did not attempt to prove it, because he knew the whole thing to be a wilful, and malicious falsehood. What Mr. Morris means, when he says that his having procured the with drawal of the election petition against ‘Sir W. W. Whiteway and other members of the party” would be a * betrayal of my friends” would, I think, require a surgical operation to find out, but it requires very little penetration to perceive the black hearted treachery existing in the mind of the author of such a letter.
