Tho picture is now at St. .lohn’a College, where it was painted, and, though it lias not yet reeoivod its final coat of varnish, and its frame, it may fairly Ikj described. The cauvaa measures H feet by feet .‘I inches, and the figure, which is life-size, iB three-quarter, length, a much mora attractive study than a full length would be. Ir. Vaughan appears in full pontilicnls, just as if about to celebrate mass, and chasuble, pallium, stole, crazier, and mitre form a mass of subjects, in which white, the prevailing hue, is beautifully rolievod by tho warmth of crimson and a/ure and the glitter of gold and gems. The Archbishop stands with his left hand grasping the crozicr, hia right hand raised as if in the act of admonition or benediction, ami hia face, full of animation, turned nearly full to the front, a poso at once graceful and diguitied.The difference in hue of the broken sheen of the chasuble, the snowy whiteness of the closely woven gloves, and the ivory tint of the pallium, mode of the wool of lambs of a particular flock and breed, is exquisitely conveyed, and artistio shading removes tho stiff appearance that otherwise so much of ouu colour (if white bo a colour) would possess. The crozier, with its myall-wood staff, surmounted .by a crook of wrought gold, is that presented to lr. Vaughan by a number of youug men, and on a linger of his right band glitters the amethyst ring presented to him by 1/ml Bute. The scarlet lands of tho mitre sud tho lining of thu chasuble, of the same warm hue, light up the picture, while the jewels of the mitro sud the golden tassels of the cincture, help to enrich it.
