W. Straus Co. This is the greatest volume of building projected in such a period of time in this area. It is 66 per cent greater than the total for the first three-quarters of 1924,is 4 per cent greater than the comparable record of 1923, which was a notably active period in the building industry, and to is 31 per cent greater than the total for the first nine months’ of 1922. California's 67 cities comprised in the Straus survey show a 3 per cent gain over last year. The 10 cities of Washington reporting are 17 per cent ahead of last year’s figure. In Oregon, 7 cities show a 29 per cent gain over last year. Four cities‘ of Utah report a total of 4 per cent above last year's figure. ‘A notable feature of the Straus analysis of these figures is the fact that better buildings are more in evi dence this year than in 1924. The average building period of 1925 calls for a cost approximately 19 per cent greater than in 1924. Since any in creases in building costs are negli gible, the difference reflects a great er proportion of major type con struction and more ambitious proj ects than in 1924. Los Angeles issued 32,529 permits for building to cost $115,767,533 dur ing the first‘nine months of this year. This is 1 per cent less than last year's record, 20 per cent less than that of 1923, but 29 per cent above that of 1622. In the Los Angeles, metropolitan Area, 16 contiguous municipalities have issued $158,393,208 in building permits during this period, 1 per cent less than the comparable figure a last year, 17 per cent less than tha of 1923, but 85 per cent greater than that of 1922. San Francisco has issued 8406 per mits for buildings to cost $39,318, 786 during the first three-quarters of the year, 1 per cent less than comparable figure of last year, but showing gaing of 15 per cent and 10 per cent respectively over the fig ures for 1928 and 1922. In the Sanrancisco bay area, 13 municipalities issued $90,692,045 in building permits during the first nine months of this year, 11 per cent more than last year, 30 permers more than the year before and 394% more than during the first three quarters of 1922.
