Chas, M. Smith, who is a candidate on the Republican ticket for the po sition of Justice of the Peace of the First Precinct of Yuma county is running for re-election, he being elect ed over his Democratic opponent two years ago. In the election of two years ago, Judge Smith was the only Republican elected to office on the Republican ticket. * Since Judge Smith took his office at the court house he has gained a host of friends and admirers because of his honest and fair dealings as the judge of the local justice court. From a Democratic standpoint the worst thing that can be said agaist the Judge is that he is a Republican and from the Republican standpoint the best thing that can be said of the Judge is that he is a Republican Judge Smith is by no means‘a new comer into this part of the world. He has seen Yuma grow from a small desert village into a thriving western city of five thousand people. He was one of the old steamboat captains on the muddy Colorado, and is one of the few old Colorado river steamboat captains who are still alive and able to tell of his experiences up land down the Colorado river when river steamers plied between Yuma and the Gulf of California many miles to the south. One of the last things that Judge Smith did when steamboating on the Colorado became a thing of the past was to take one of the old steam ers which Yuma had been so previo! and build him home from the materials which he obtained by tearing down the old boat. The Judge now lives at this home on Eighth street a short distance from the city and every piece of wood in the entire structure at one time used to travel between Yuma and the Gulf of California. Judge Smith has made his home in Yuma for many years. While in this community he has gained a reputa tion for honesty and integrity which is of the best. As Judge of the Jus tice court he has met and has had dealings with all classes of people who have come to have confidence in his judgment and the way he has handled his office. He is a good Re publican and consequently expected the united support of his parity. He is a good citizen, an honest man and has made good as the Judge of the Justice Court and expects many of his Democratic frends to vote for him in the coming ef:**'en Adv.lce.
