Smith, Jr., in 1858.The first settler on the Truckee Meadows was a man named Jameson, who started a trading post on the Truckee River somewhere near Glendale in 1852. In 1887 Jno. P. Stona and Ghas. G. Gates settled at Glendale and the place was known as Stone Gates’ Grossing. In 1859 a man named Fuller settled near where the Riverside Hotel now Btands, and Reno’s first name was named Fuller’s Grossing. In 1868 Mr. Lake bought Fuller out and the place was known as Lake’s Grossing. In 1868 the name was changed to Reno in honor of General Jessie Reno, who was killed at the battle of South Mountain. The first railway train reached Reno June 18, 1868. Henry Miller, Henry Ing, M. F. Evans, James Evans, W. Sturtevaut, J. H. Sturtevant, L. O. Savage, Peleg Brown, Richard Martin, L. P. Drexier and Granville W. Huffaker were very early settlers on the Truckee Meadows.Mason Valley was settled by W. H.
