Being the representative of a system of national policy directly opposed to the whole system of aristocratic monopoly, it is perfectly natural they should exclaim against if, misrepresent if, and call upon the people to abjure it. while thev inconsistently «ud falsely declare that there is no party which adopts its principles for a guide, unless it he the whigs themselves. Thevare both fond and fearful-of the name, and not unfrcqucntly assume it, while they uniformly go against the principles it designates. They have stolen the name of Democrat and Jcftcrstnian for some of their newspapers that advocate all the federalism of Alexander Hamilton, with his National Bank and bold departure from the Constitution—that advocate all the federalism of Jidin Adams, with his laws to muzzle the press and to exile the alien from the homo of his adoption. Their leaders, repudiating all democratic principles, or rather, eschewing them, for ihcy never had principles to p^t away, would fain make the people believe that (he party called democrats are equally destitute of principles.The different measures that first divided politicians in this country, separated them into two parlies as little alike as light and darkness. One party was the National Bank credit system party. The otherparty opposed a National Bank and contended for the establishment of a financial system according to the intention- of the framers of the Constitution and the dictates of that sacred compact—a cash system independent of nil banks. Such were (hen the great measures that marked the broad distinction between federalists and democrats. If those measures characterized parties then, they can he no less characteristic nnw of the two parlies that agitate the nation with their strife. The party that was then the bank monopoly credit party acknowledged and boasted of the name of federalist. The same measures they still contend for, but to deny the old name they lake the name of whig. The national politics of the other party were marked bv their advocacy of the constitu-tionnl currency of gold and silver, and their opposing a hhntcci credit system, the bane of the nation; and the federalists then took pleasure in calling that party. “democrats1’ the u vile democrats, led by i he vile associate of Torn Paine,” the “ infidel,” “ tv rant,” “Jefferson.” The same measures the democrats still contend for; hut the federal party for some reason nr other, wish to deprive them of the name. Has the name become too popular with the people? Have the people become too well convinced of the superiority of democratic principles? Why will not the whigs admit thev arc federalists, when to every body it is plain? Why do ihc opposition to the democratic party cast off the name of which they were once so proud? The reason was given by. Mr. Jefferson many years ago. He predicted their change of name, and assigned the reason why* it would be made. Knowing they were down forever with the old name, they would barter principle for “ the clonk of a new name,” with the object of coming “into power under some other form.” This plan has been tried once with success.When the mercantile firm of Clay and Adams was formed, and the State of Kentucky was put in for-cnpital, “the cloak” was national republicanism. But this cloak deceived but few and the stock in trade dwindled away and left the partnersgets drunk and abuses his wife, or if a man entertains any opinions that are thought absurd, he is at once set down for a Loco Foco! If a man is in favor of having rich men and wealthy corporations pay their debts like honest men, he is a stark mad LocoFoco! If one is in favor of a treasury for the safe keeping of Uncle Sam’smoney so that it will not go into banks for rich men to speculate on, Q£jr there goes a Loco Foco. If any one is in favor of men being judged and prized by their men -tal and moral worth, instead of their money, why then, Loco Foco, Loco Foco! And so runs the definition.And now for what a Loco Foco really is—a Democrat, a benevolent, kind hearted honest man—a lover of the human race —one who is happy where others arc happy—who despises all aristocracy, all tyranny over the minds of men—one who respects the industrious poor man as much as he does the rich man, (and more if he he more honest)—one who is in favor of a gold and silver currency—in favor of having the workman paid when he has earned his money—against hanks, as they favor the rich and withhold favors from the poor —in favor of men being honest, industrious, enterprising, taking a wife if one chooses, and rearing children in the way they should go, in the path of honor and duty. Such is a genuine Loco Foco.— The man who is in favor of banking can- __ C3not be a Loco Foco, or Democrat, whatever he may call himselfibankrupt. Their draft upon the bank ofthe people’s confidence was dishonored. The cloak was too short to conceal the cloven foot, so it was eked out by. fifty-two thousand Webb fastened to its skirts. It was also Whitneyed, and after the fashion of the sons of Levi, furnished with a Bell, and it then magically transformed its wearers into v. hrgs as it had previously converted federalists into national republicans. But their measures always identified them as the federalists, whatever the disguise they might assume. Coming into existence as national bank federalists, their party could not change their nature with the name, they are national bank federalists even unto this day.The democrats have never adopted any kind of concealment, nor ever changed names. They have always boldly and frankly avowed their principles and objects, and appealed to the experience, the judgment and the patriotism of the people for approval or condemnation.
