In Memoriam: Rufus Rook“God has two dwellings one in heaven, and the other in a meek and thankful heart.Isaac WaltonHeaven can be shared!I hope, within my heart that Mayme Rook can beconsoled by this statement from one who believed in God, Heaven is a place to be shared by those who go before and those left behind with rich, warm memories to stem the grief in that world beyond. When Rufus Rook stepped into the arms of his Maker, a little of Mt. Healthy died. He was so much a part of it over the years. His good friend JohnLaverman said to me “we ve been buddies for 43years, since we were boys. He was a good man. ror more than 80 years this tall, amiable manwalked the streets of this area as a young boy, as ayoung man who served with dignity in the U.S. Armyin World War I, as a mature business man who alwayshad a friendly smile and a hearty wave of his hand toall who passed him by.The history of our community cannot be written without tracing his footsteps across the sidewalks of Mt. Healthy through all those years he gave to Godand his community.Rufus took long strides throughout his life and God rewarded him with 86 years of meaningful existence.I was touched by the Wesley Werner Legion service in which all members filed slowly by his casket offered a salute and whispered “Farewell Comrade ” Be of thankful heart those of you who loved him that he shared for so long a time your lives.
