Without further ceremony (he membership was divided into three sections and enrolled. There are between seventy-five and one hundred teachers in attendance, who expect to derive great benefit from the various discussions and papers to be presented. It is Quito essential to enroll, as the certificate of attendance to the two days’ session will entitle a teacher to receive a full month's salary, Without deducting the two days.Otherwise they will only get pay for eighteen days for this school month.This afternoon the convention reconvened at 2 o’clock. Prof. Marshall made the usual announcements, nftcr which Prof. E. Y. Keltor of Renick, read an interesting paper on Urn Text Books Newly Adopted by County Board.”Mr. Keltor strongly endorsed the action of the board in its adoption of the texl-books, particularly as to Townsend’s civil government. He declared it to be superior to Rader’s in every way .and said so far asOie was concerned, ho stood to endorsethe action of the board.Mr. Keitcr’s paper was discussed by J. W. Carlisle, Courtney Jackson, Mary Cave, T. W. Kelley, Bessie Beach, after which tlie association was addressed by Dr. J.- L. Merriam.Prof. Claude Marshall, principal of the Bast Side school and county commissioner, presides at all meetings.The first topic, Relative Importance of Reading In the School Course,” was ably handled by J. E. Markiand, and Misses Minnie Guy, and Stella Strawn. It was treated as reading to give pleasure to both listener and reader and not as the mechanical elocutionary reading so often taught. Then reading Is the main way of acquiring knowledge and the children should ho taught to ..grasp the author’s meaning so that study will become a pleasure. Instead of the weary monotony of memorizing there will he the ready grasp of the thought of the author which is such a pleasure. This wasfollowed by methods of teaching primary reading by Misses NoraKlernan and Ella Adkisson.To any one outsido of the teaching profession the ways of teaching - the diminutive chaps to read without learning their A, B, C’s, even the word, sentence and many other ingenious methods, seem to he simply marvelous. Miss Nellie Sims presented a class of grade two pupils in number work which clearly demonstrated that children can get started In arithmetic without realizing how bright they really are. They have an-ldea of all measures, although they do not call them linear, liquid, etc. The last discussion of the forenoon session was United States History—How, When and What to Teach.0 by Percy Scott, C.; M. Weyand, J. V. Minor and Pearl McCune. Like all preceding numbers on the program these practical teachers demonstrated that they were only stating facte when they told how interesting the study of the nation’s history could be made when presented in the proper manner to the eager mind of childhood.Each subject was freely discussed by the members of the institute and it was often found that there was more than one successful plan to accomplish the desired effect-—tho development of the intellect of the young child whose future life depends so much on the early trainingin the school room.Belov/ will bo found a list of those teachers attending who have registered.
