IIRandolph County Teachers Convened This Morning at High School Assembly Hoorn.TO HOLD THREE-DAY CONVENTIONFJfili /.iimini Mooting Promise* \\V —Expect Large Enrollment.rinireday Dally.i*At 10:30 this morning Prof. Claude .Marshal] called the Randolph county teachers’ institute to order and they listened to the inspiring - music furnished by the orchestra of tlio Moberly High school. Without further ceremony the membership was divided Into three sections and enrolled. There are between seventy* five and one hundred teachers In attendance. who expect to derive great benelU from the various discussions and papers to be presented. It Is quite essential to enroll, as the certificate of attendance to the two ; days’ session will entitle a lonelier (o receive a fnil month's salary. Without deducting the two days. Otherwise they will only get pay for eighteen days for (his school month.This afternoon the convention reconvened at 2 o'clock. Prof. Marshall made the p.sunl announcements, nflcr which Prof. E. Y. Kcitor of Renick, rend an interesting paper on the Text Hooks Newly Adopted by County Board.’’Mr. Keller strongly endorsed the action or the board In Its adoption of the texl-books. particularly as to Townsend’s civil government. Ho declared It to be superior to Rader's in every way .and said so far nsOio was concerned, he stood to endorse the action of the board.Mr. Keiler’a paper was discussed by J. W. Carlisle, Courtney Jackson, -Mary Cave. T. W. Kelley. Bcsaio Beach, after which the association was addressed by Dr. J.- L. Merrlam.Prof. Claudo Marshall, principal of tho East Sldo school and county commissioner, presides at all meetings.The first topic, “Relative Importance of Rending In tho School Course, wus nbly handled by J. 10. Mnrklnnd, and Misses Minnio Guy, and Stella Slrnwn. It was treated as rending to glvo pleasure to both . listener and reader and not as the mechanical elocutionary rending so often taught. Then reading Is the main way of acquiring knowledge and the children should bo taught to ^grasp the author's meaning so that study will become a pleasure. Instead of the weary monotony of memorizing (here will bo the ready grasp of the thought of the author which Is such a pleasure. This was followed by methods of teaching primary rending by Misses Norn Klernnn and Ella Adklsson.To any one outsldo of the leach-.ing profession tho ways of teaching the diminutive chaps to read without learning their A, B, C’s, even tho word, sentence and many other ingenious moth ode, seem to he simply marvolous. Miss Nolllc Sims presented n class of grndc two pupils In number work which clearly demonstrated that children can get started in arithmetic without realizing how bright they really are. They have an idea of all measures, although they do not call them linear, liquid, otc. Tho last discussion of tho forenoon session was .United States History—How, When and What to Tench, by Percy Scott, C. M. Woynnd, J. V. Minor and Pearl McCunc. Like all preceding numbers on tho program these practical teachers demonstrated Hint they wore only stating facts when they told how interesting tho study of the nation’s history could be made when presented in tho proper manner to tho eager mind of childhood.Each subject was freely discussed by the members of the institute and It was often found that there was more than one successful plan to accomplish the desired effect—tho development of the Intellect of the young child whose future life depends so much on tho early training in the school room.Below will bo found a list of those teachers attending who have registered.
