The physician urges his convalescent pa tient to spend as much time as possible in the sunlight, because every physician knows the value of sunlight as a curative agent. It is not necessary to remain in the sun shine whenever you are out of doors, i. e., in the direct rays of the sun, but in the sunlight instead. The light of the sun pene trates even where it cannot shine. If you sit in the shade you should be sure that it is not too dense and that there is moving air—air in motion, not dead air. Eves need sunshine, sunlight and an abundance of fresh air. This was never better exemplified than in the case of 13 consumptives who, at the suggestion of certain well-meaning but misguided phy aicians, entered the Mammoth Cave, in which they were to remain day and night. The doctors worked on a false theory, viz., that the pure air and even temperature (52 °) would suffice of themselves to bring back the glow of health. But, alas! God's great restorative agents, sunshine and sun light, never penetrated those caverns of Egyptian darkness. Those patient patients patiently sub mitted to the decree, accepted the inevit able, which in this case spelled death. The doctors made a serious mistake in hav ing all the meals sent into the cave, in stead of encouraging the patients to go out into the glorious sunshine of Kentucky and breathe deeply of the sun-magnetized — they climbed the little hill to the tel. The stream of water in the cave has its outlet underground, in the Green river. Be tween the constant change of water and change of air through the great opening of the cave the very best conditions prevail, save one—the shutting out of every ray of sunlight — one of the greatest remedial agents that the world has ever known. So pure is the air that the wooden troughs placed there during the War of 1812 show no signs of disintegration ; the air so brac ing that, after having walked miles in those dark underground passages, one feels not the slightest sense of weariness, but of exhilaration instead. The consumptives proved, to their own satisfaction, that plant life would not thrive; for, near the habitations they had erected were evidences of their failure in their effort to raise mushrooms—the one thing of all things “preferring darkness to light.” The lesson to be learned from experiences is self-evident, viz., that living tissue, as well as plant life, must have sunlight in order to thrive. Can anyone imagine anything more cheerless and more hopeless than to place one who is ill in a sunless room? Many a sick child has pined away because it was denied God's sunlight, which He has so freely given, but which the kind, loving, faithful, but blinded mother, has shut out in order to obtain a more comfortable at mosphere. Not long ago a mother insisted on keep ing a sick child in a room where the sun shine never entered, the room having been darkened to keep it cool. The little one died, but the mother would not believe that she stood between the child and its re covery. A few days later another child becamell and the mother placed it in the same dark, sunless room. She was in formed that life or death depended upon the room of sunlight or the room of dark ness. Naturally, yet under protest, she re moved the child to the room where sun shine was freely admitted. The child in the sunny room lived. The mother was convinced, but, like many others, not with out a sacrifice on the altar of ignorance and prejudice. Utilizing Color. Many of us remember when away back in the seventies the bluegrass craze swept over the country. Like every other fadt, it had its strong and its weak points. It was good as far as it went, but it did not go far enough—in the right direction. It (the blue) was not used scientifically, but indiscriminately, « ¢., for all manner of ailments. It was equivalent to using one kind of medicine for all kinds of diseases. I remember seeing an old gentleman in New Hampshire (1877) taking a sun bath under blue glass. I asked him the nature of his disease. He informed me it was paraly sis. Think of it! Treating paralysis by 4 gun bath through blue glass. He would have experienced about as much benefit and al most as much comfort if he had been placed in a moderately cold or cool refrigerator. Not that I would speak disparagingly of the treatment; on the contrary, I have much faith in chromopathy (dealing with colors) when used intelligently. Blue was not the proper color to use in that case; blue is cooling, soothing. He needed the red glass treatment. Rel is vital, the expres sion of the sensitive state, the life-giving principle, the blood , the caloric, or healing, force. The rays of the sun passing through blue glass would be more appropriately used if allowed free access to the sanctum sancto rum of editors and literary men and all who need a cool head and deliberate judg ment. Dr. E. D. Babbitt, In his “College of Finer Forces,” has done much to promul gate these truths and to thoroughly demon strate the medicinal effects of the rays of the sun through various colored lenses filled with water; also the effect of sun-magnet ized water when taken internally ; and sun baths under colored glass singly and in com binations. A dark-blue bottle when filled with water and placed in the sun for a few hours and its contents taken inwardly will have a decidedly and perceptibly event effect from the water so served and so taken from an amber-colored bottle. Try it. Blue for the nerves, neuralgia and nervous head. ache ; amber for the liver and bilious head. ache. Apropos of this: Drugs are affected ben eficially or detrimentally, as the case may be, according to the color of the bottle or packages in which they are placed. Some medicines are excitants; others soothing. All drugs used for the purpose of soothing or quieting should be kept in blue bottles or packages ; excitants in red; liver prepa rations in amber or yellow, etc. In discussing this point with a prominent Ohio druggist he admitted that he lost an entire case of a particular drug soon after it was exposed to the light. As long as it was unpacked and in the basement it re tained its strength, but when placed upon the shelves it lost its efficiency. The drug was in the ordinary white bottle. Had it been in the proper colored bottle it could have been exposed to the light with profit— profit to the medicine and profit to the dealer. A Most Trying Color. Among the trying colors, especially for the eye, is red. I would especially caution ladies against the wearing of red veils. Many a case of color,blindness has resulted in the predominance of red in one's sur roundings, for instance, red wallpaper, red lamp shades, red curtains. Purple, however, is the most dangerous color there is—in its effect on the brain through the nerves of the eye. Green, on the other hand, is said to be the king of colors, and no amount of it can do you harm. It soothes the whole system and preserves the eyesight. What about the blue sky? I do not wish to appear iconoclastic, but scientists are pretty well agreed that the sky is really white, tinged with green. It is only the distance and clearness which makes it seem blue. : porte and blue are the three ele wards whose onion gives birth to all the varieties that delight our eyes. We have proof this in one of nature's most beautiful phenomena—the rainbow. It is composed of seven colors in which we dis tinguish the red, yellow and blue in all their purity. Life is unproductive until the three unit ed in one bring all things to perfection. Plants will blossom into a bright passion of life under the influence of the red and yel low rays. No fruit appears, however, with out the added power of the blue ray. The red is the caloric, or heating, principle; yellow the luminous, or light-giving, prin ciple, while in the blue we have the power of activism, or chemical action. Every ray of light bears these three forms of energy—heat, light and chemical action. These forces can be separated; heat with out light, light without heat, chemical ac tion without heat or light. Unstinted praise should forever be given to the late Prof. Neils R. Finsen for his discovery and the great boon it has been and ever will be to —— While the X-ray has done much, the ray has done more in the field of healing. The former is yet an unknown quantity of uncertain action; the latter a known quantity.
