IVtcr Mathews of Company E was next on the program, and wan probably one of the most Interesting characters of all in attendance at the reunion, and his ofT-hand talk seemed to just strike a popular chord in the heart of every old soldier present. Comrade Mathews is a full blooded Digger Indian. In 184H, o. C. Mathews got him from the triln* while out on the Pacific coast, the little “pappose” only being about four or five years old—and brought him back, as a curiosity, to his home near Monroe. His Indian name was Owha, meaning “Yes Away.” He was christened Peter and adopted the name of Mathews. He was a bright and manly fellow, and grew to manoood in the Mathews family. He bnlisted in Company K of the 40th, served with them until the close of the war. and was one of the best soldiers in the regiment. After his j discharge he attended school at Pel-| la, Iowa Citv and Oberlln, Ohio, at*f **itaining a line education. He entered the Methodist ministry, and for some time has been doing evangelistic work. He has promised to give us a brief history of his life for publication soon, which will no doubt be lull of interest.
