Passing through Manchester I stopped at Stretford as I wished to pass a night at Longford Plall Coffee Tavern. This splendid house was built by Mrs. Rylands, whose recent purchase of the Althorp library will be in the recollection of my readers. Mr. Fenwick managed this house two years ago at the time of the Manchester Conference, and many perhaps visited it. Although intended to benefit the working-man I did not see a single specimen enter its doors the whole time I was there. I believe it is mostly used by commercials who learn the habit of retiring early, the rule being most stringent that at 11 p.m. all lights shall be put out. The rooms are more suited to a mansion, and the small charge made is simply ridiculous. Its present manager is Mr. Hoyle, who is ever ready to please his guests and make them comfortable.
