14 40 IT v A, »K •The work contains seventy pages of county history, embracing many tliiDgs in the past of Warrick known by only the few, and there are also some which we should like to know more about. The account of the mnrder of Athe Meeks by Settee-down’s warriors an d the retaliation of the whites upon an innocent Shawnee Indian is contrary to the traditional account we have always heard, and yet General James 0. Veatch and other unquestionable authority are cited for the substantiality of the version. It will doubt less shock many who have found consolation in the story that Settee-down was barbarously muidered to know that he led the retreat of his band after the murder of Meeks and escaped unscared. Yet such is the knock-down history gives to tradition. Passing from the time “When wild in wood the noble savage ran?'the history of the organization and settlement of (he county is taken up and disposed of iu four pages of facts and reflections.
