The dream of establishing a mall in the heart of Brandon became a reality with the opening of the Brandon Gallery on Oct. 15, 1980. Ten years later Brandon Gallery provides vital services not only to the core area, but to the entire city and all of western Manitoba. The Gallery houses 50 stores and services. It is a strong supporter of the business community and of the downtown Business Improvement Area. All of Brandon Gallery’s businesses are members of the BIA. ‘‘Not only are the Gallery stores an entity in themselves, they are also members of the team,’’ stated downtown BIA Manager, Carol Maggiacomo. She added that the Gallery’s stores certainly compli ment the just over 500 services in the BIA area. The focus for Brandon Gallery’s anniversary is The Perfect 10. In conjunction with the occasion, The Gallery and CKLQ are sponsoring The Perfect 10 contest. This is guar anteed to provide lots of laughs, as well as chances to win valuable prizes. Entry forms are available in the anniversary flyer or at the In formation Booth at the Gallery, and may be deposited in the draw drum. Names will be broadcast over CKLQ three times daily. The person then has 10 minutes to call the sta tion. The caller is given 10 seconds to name 10 items on a specific topic to win $50 in gift certificates. All en tries drawn are automatically en tered in the Grand Prize draw for $1,000 in Brandon Gallery gift cer tificates. During the next few months an air of festivity will prevail as the Gal lery’s stores and services, many of which have been here from day one, continue the celebration! Balloons, streamers and decorations, will create a party atmosphere. Dave Middleton, recently appointed ge neral manager of Brandon Gallery, is enthusiastic about his first new venture and has arranged for a variety of activities to promote the centre past its 10th anniversary proper. Demonstrations, public ser vice exhibits, sales promotions and other special events will all add to the spirit. The merriment will con tinue from now on through Hallo ween and the weeks following, laying the groundwork for the high profile holiday season. Middleton, careful not to divulge any secrets, promises an ‘Enchanted Christmas’? at Brandon Gallery. The season officially begins with Santa’s arrival on Nov. 17, and a brand new display that ‘‘kids’’ of all ages will enjoy! The Brandon Gallery may be celebrating its past, but it is also focussing on the future. Middleton is positive in his outlook for the next decade. ‘‘Despite the economy, I feel it looks good.’ He believes cus tomer service will be the key to the Gallery’s success in the ’90s. ‘‘If we make it fun to be here and a pleasant shopping experience, people will come back,”’ he says. The Brandon Gallery enters its new decade with confidence. A realm of new ideas, blended with the comfort of old ideals — the per fect combination — guaranteed to make your shopping experience, a pleasure! Dave Toews, longstanding member of the maintenance team, has been with the Brandon Gallery since it opened in October, 1980. His career has provided him the opportunity to perform an assortment of tasks including ‘painting, re pair, snowplowing , just about anything,” he grins ‘'t enjoy it, I've learned a lot He recalls one blizzard several years ago when his first duty was to ‘dig out the Eaton's manager and then my own man ager, so they could get in to work.’ The Brandon Gallery, on that fateful day, didn't open until noon on account of the snow, the only delayed opening in its 10-year history Toews is an avid cap collector and working in the mall gives him the opportunity to spot new and different caps 11) often stop somone,” he admits. ‘It’s interesting to hear the stories behind the cap and how and where they got! “Changing seasons is always fun, adds Toews He remem bers one year building a chimney from which Santa could arrive in a puff of smoke! His job truly defies the bounda ries of a ‘‘job description,’ and gives new meaning to the phrase ‘Jack of all trades.” — thoughts on by east Dave? ‘“‘Not yet’, he quips.
