deal could i 4) erase threat By PATRICIA GREENE Star Staff Writer A decision by Sweet-Orr and Co., Inc., to exercise a property purchase option will erase the possibility of a layoff of Anniston city employes if the city council agrees According to Tom Wright, city finance director, Sweet. Orr has notified city officials it would like to purchase the property in the Golden Springs Industrial Park, plus some adjacent land for a total of $148,787. The city council will have to agree before the sale will take effect CITY MANAGER Carl Cheatham said the sale would be a ‘‘windfall’’ for city finances. He said the additional money, not included in the budget for fiscal 1976, would provide the needed revenue to continue funding salaries for 3% city employes Cheatham told the council and public works department union a month ago he would have to lay off the 36 employes to balance the budget ‘But if this property sale goes through, we can accomplish the reorganization of city departments and live within our budget by employes through normal attrition instead of layoffs,’ Cheatham said Monday SWEET-CAR proposes to buy the building it is leasing from the city, the property it is on and an additional 1 .2 acres Cheatham told the council and members of local 1099.
