WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves picked Homecoming to win their first game of the sea son after four defeats, stopping Highland 27-13 in a Southeast Iowa tilt. Roger Thomson gave the crowd a thrill quickly as he returned the opening Highland kick-off for a touchdown. Jim Carlson kicked the extra point. The Huskies cut the margin to 7-6 on a one yard run by Steve Potter but missed the extra point. Randy Crawford, WMU quarterbarks, went over from the one and Carlson again converted to make it 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. Steve Norder cracked two yards for another Wolfpack touchdown in the second period. Carlson missed the conversion. Highland narrowed the gap to 20-13 at the half on a ten yard run by Dennis Dea. A pass for the PAT was good. The clinching touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 19 yard pass from Crawford to Chuck Reighard. Carlson booted the point. Steve Klopfenstein was the top rusher for the winners with 47 yards. Gary Jones, Reighard, Thom son, Phil Widmer and Dennis Nich ols were outstanding on defense. WMU notched ten first downs, 133 yards rushing and 60 passing (6 of 13). Highland had 11 first downs, 91 yards rushing and 138 passing (9 of 21). Debbie Cornick was selected as the Homecoming queen.
