Mr. John Matthes, long time and well known. Democrat of Johnsoncounty, passed away Saturday morning at his home in Iowa City. He was 72.Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Beckman funeral home, with Dr. Harry D. Henry officiating.Mr. Matthes was well known throughout Johnson county. For the past 40 years he has served continuously as Constable, and his kindness and fairness with all in his capacity as an officer of the law made for him a large circle of loyal friends who regret his passing.Mr. .Matthes had not been in the best of health for some time, but regardless, he continued his work always with the same smiling and sunny disposition that has ehai’aetemed him throughout his life.Surviving him besides the widow and four sons, are two sisters, a brother and six grandchildren. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Matthes, and three sisters, Margaret, Nellie and' Elizabeth, preceded him in death.
