The East. A locomotive exploded on the Conners ville Railroad in Pittsburgh, Pa., on the 29th, killing the fireman, and seriously in juring three other persons. General McClellan arrived in New York, from Europe, on the 29th alt. A raid on Portsmouth, N. H., was made by a crew of 2,000 fishermen on the 25th ult. They plundered, rioted and fired on the inhabitants, but the police, after a se vere struggle, expelled the freebooters, after arresting thirteen of them. The international cricket match played in Boston between the All-England Eleven and twenty-two cricketers selected from Boston and vicinity, New York and Phil adelphia, was concluded on the 30th tlt. The former scored 180 to 76 by the latter. A fire in Brooklyn, N. Y., on the 30th alt., damaged warehouse property to the extent of $500,000. Melvin Foster beat John Deery, at the French game, 115 points in 300, in New York, on the 30th tilt. A selected nine of the Trimountains, Harvard and Lowell Base Ball Clubs de feated nine of the English Cricketers in a game of baseball, at Boston, on the 1st. Score, 21 to 4. The Roman Catholic Synod in New York city have enacted that no absolution must be given to Free Masons, and that marriages must take place in church. A motion to prohibit absolution to Fenians was lost. The Keystone Base Ball Club, of Phila delphia, defeated the Unions, of Morris sania, on the 2d, by a score of 24 to 15. The Cincinnati Club defeated the Nation als, of New York city—29 to 28. The Republicans of the Essex, Mass., District who are opposed to the re-elec tion of Gen. Butler to Congress, have nominated Richard A. Dana, Jr., who has accepted, The South, Robbins, who was charged with the as sassination of General Hindman, has been acquitted by the authorities at Helena. Accounts from North Carolina say the yield of cotton to the acre has been de cidedly better than that of last year.
