by Eddie J . Shaw Among Wellington's well known, long time citizens is Art “Gappy’’ Gasper, of 920 W. Lincoln, who was born in 1899 on a strip run farm in Oklahoma. In 1907 the Gasper family moved to Wellington from Arkansas City, Kan., and Gappy grew up and has lived all his life here. After moving to Wellington the Gaspers pur chased the old Ringler Bottling Works, located just east of the old Glamann Ice Company, which they named Gasper Bros Bottling Co. Old timers will remember the old pop factory. Gappy attended the old Fifth Ward School. Upon graduating from old Sumner County High School in 1918 he entered Fairmount University, Wichita and later in the Army in World War I. After attending Gem City Business College at Quincy, NL., he worked in Wellington for the Santa Fe Railroad as engine dispatcher, check clerk and baggage agent It was in 1922 when Gappy purchased a half interest in the bottling works, known as Gasper Son. The partnership bottled pop under their trade name of ‘Tall Tom, which was manufactured in an assortment of flavors and sold for nickle a bottle and 60 cents a case. They serviced all of Sumner County and part of Oklahoma with their product and also with Country Club “near beer” Art served many years as an officer of the Wellington Elks Lodge No. 1167, as Inner Guard, Tyler and club manager, retiring in 1962. He was club manager for 12 or 13 years before his retirement. He was an active member of the Elks for 40 years. He has been a member of the Tom Schwinn Post No. 90 of the American Legion for 34 years. Art and Beulah Murray were married in 1924 and will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next May. Mrs. Murray is also a lifelong resident of Wellington born in the home less than a block from their present home at 920 W. Lincoln here in Wellington The Gaspers’ have four children, Mrs. Collette Mc Cartney, 1323 N. Olive, Wellington, Mrs. Colleene Cox, Fredonia, Kan., Arthur D. Gasper of Lawrence, Kan., and Erin Marcus, Lincoln, Kan., six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Gappy is an avid fisherman and never misses a chance to try his skill. He says he has fished Slate Creek for 60 years consistently and knows of no one in Wellington who can beat that record. Incidently Gappy caught six nice channel catfish this past Monday. Art Gasper
