The Hornets dropped their opening District 17AA game of the 1967 season to the Giddings Buffaloes 13-5.Caldwell opened the scoring early in the first quarter when George Zavodny kicked a 32 yard field goal to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. The Orange and White had gotten a break earlier when Giddings quarterback Curtis Namken fumbled and Zavodny pounced on it at the Buffaloes 15-yard line. Steven Kyles picked up one yard to the 14 yard line. Passes on second and third downs failed to connect, and then the Hornets called on Zavodny for the three-pointer. Dick Bowers carried for six yards and fullback Robevt Kocurek carried three times for 24 yards, before they were forced to kick.The second quarter saw Giddings take over the lead with 4:05 left 7-3. Quarterback Curtis Namken passed three yards to end James Dubcak for the score. Dubcak added the extra point. The touchdown play climaxed a 73 yard drive that took six plays. The big plays in the drive were a 34 yard pass and an 18 yarder from Namken to fullback Ronnie Urban.Late in the second period, the Hornets scored a safety to cut the lead to 7-5. Facing fourth down and long yardage from their own one yard line, Dubcak went hack to punt for the Buffs. The snap from center was over his head, and went out of the endzone giving Caldwell two points. The half end ed with Giddings leading 7-5.Early in the third quarter, Caldwell once again got a break when Robert Kocurek picked off a Giddings aerial and returned it to the Giddings 21 yard line Once again the Hornets failed to capitalize*, and Giddings took over on their own 20 following a pass interception of their own. From this point the Buffs drove 80 yards to their second TD of the night. The Buffaloes fouhd the going rather easy until they got to the Hornet 5 yard line. On first down at the five halfback Krugler moved the ball to the two. On second down Krug ler moved to the one, and on third down he was thrown for a yard loss. On fourth down, Giddings Quarterback threw a desperation pass that was way out of the reach of anyone, butCameron Yoemen are hosts for the Cameron vs. Caldwell game on Friday, October 20. This will mark annual homecoming time for Cameron. The annual homecoming dance will be held at the National Guard Armory, just off Highway 36 west of Cameron, immediately following the game until 1:00 a.m. Dance music will be furnished by the seven-piece orchestra of Jay Leutwyler of Austin. Andrew Sandoval set up the first score on a 35 yard run, and then scored from three yards out. The try for points failed. The second touchdown was scored by Doug Smith, who intercepted a Giddings pass and returned it 65 yards for the score. Again the try for points failed, and Caldwell led 12-0.Giddings scored a safety in the third period to cut the lead to 12-2. In the final quarter with 5 minutes remaining Giddings pushed across a touchdown to cut the lead to 12-8. The try for points failed, and Caldwell held on for a 12-8 victory.Coach Matejowsky praised the play of the defensive unit for doing a good job. They heldplay on a pass interference call The ball now resting on the one, the Hornets defense once again had their work cut out for them. The first two downs failed to gain as Victor Urban and Nam ken both carried for no gain. On third down fullback Ronnie Urban just got over the doublestripe for the score. Hornet Mike Worthington blocked the extra point attempt, and Giddings led 13-5.Caldwell made their last bid about midway in the 4th quarter. The Hornets got the hall at Giddings 37 yard line when Buff halfback Larry Sanders fumbled and Hornet GregoryKocurek pounced on it. The Buffaloes were penalized to the 18 on a pass interference call first down. After Hornet quarterback Lee Easter picked up four yards on first down, two passes fell incomplete and the third was intercepted to end Caldwell’s threat.Caldwell’s leading hall carrier was Robert Kocurek with 32 yards on 8 carries.
