(illEAT HEAT IN JERUSALEM.Dr. Chaplin, writing from Jerusalem, August 31, 1881, says: “During theearly summer, when Europe was suffering from excessively high temperatures, Palestine was even cooler than usual at that period of the year; but for several days past we have now had a most extraordinarily hot time, the thermometer in the thermometer-houseGthon the Mission Hospital premises registering 112 deg. on three successiveJ0]thdays. Fortunately the air was very dry, which rendered this heat less unendurable. The difference betweenchtharhethe dry and the wet bulb thermometers was at one time as much as 40 deg. The mean maximum temperature forAugust is here 87 deg. During theC C-'ofthlast few days it has been 109.5 deg.The Siberian pest that has been ralt;r-Oingin Russia is described as an inflammation of the spleen, that first attacked cattle and horses. The diseased anisescmals, without giving any premonitory symptoms of illness, would suddenly fall in their tracks and expire. The spread of the epidemic to human beings | a is being attributed to the ignoranceremTJv.and carelessness of the populace and police authorities. Although with jt;sufficient evidence that the pest is eon- ^ tageous, the owners of animals dying of it were allowed to skin them anduse or sell their hides. This spreadthe contagion both within and be von dcabtithe confines of the province of Novgorod, in which it first manifested itself. The peasants sought to check the epidemic by forming religious processionseflt;and marching about with banners bear-eoing the figure of the Virgin, and reciting prayers. This only helped to dis- G tribute the seeds of the disease still aufurther. Large numbers of domestic animals have fallen a prey to it, and a also many human lives. One cireuni- c stance that added to its destructiveness r was the differences that existed for atime among, the physicians as to the v best mode of treating it, their apparent c uncertainty serving to heighten the c natural terror of the country popu- t lace.
