J■ a • e • -----Terrible Tragedy.The Grant county Witness contains the particulars of a terrible and bloody tragedy which took place at Fairplay, in Grant county on Monday evening, the 25th ult.The particulars of this tragic affair are as follows :(hie Dr. IJarney and his wife resided in Fairplay, and just across the street from them lived the daughter of Mrs. Harney by a former marraige. The daughter’s husband is in Idaho, or some other dis tant locality. Dr. Harney has for some time past been in the habit of accusing his daughter-in-law of keeping a house of ill fame, and had pre-cmptorily forbidden bis wife to have any intercourse with her.Mrs. Harney seemingly obeyed, and never went to her daughters when the Doctor won Id be likely to know it. It seems that on Monday Dr. Harney bad been absent all day. Returning about dark, in approaching li s home, he saw his wife just coinin'* out of her daughter’s house. Being a t. an of violent temper, he became to enraged at this open violation of his orders, that he rushed into his house, seized his revolver, and as his wife entered, attacked her fiercely. He did not fire his pistol then, but beat his victim with it about the head,knocking; her down. Thedafltrh-ter hearing Mrs. Harney’s cries for help, rushed across the street to her rescue.—As she entered the house. Dr. Harney left his wife and turned savagely upon her, knocking her down,kicking her, and final ly shooting her through the luad, killing her immediately, lie then fired three shots at his wife without effect.1 he wretched murderer seeing the result of his fiendish passion, arid hearing the footsteps of his neighbois co ning to the rescue, threw away his pistol, seized a lancet and inflicted several gashes on his throat. The neighbors rushed in aud took away the lancet, when he produced a bottle of strychnine, and raised it to his lips, but it was knocked from his hand.Mrs. Harney’s condition is dangerous, but she may recover. The murderer’s wounds are not dangerous, and he will probably liva to meet a deserved punish- ofineut. lie is described as a man of vio- ,.lent uinuer, surly disposition, and general rough character. Some years ago he had a shooting affray'with another physician.]It is supposed he indicted the wounds (_upon himself anlt;l attempted to lake poison —m order lo produce the belief that he was ! p insane. —Grant County Witness. »
