He heard about the twister in DenverBY ED WRIGHT JR.EditorThe surprise Oct. 1 tornado caused Ed Stagnate, Anderson fire chief and township Civil Defense coordinator, some concern.And he was in Denver on vacation. When he heard about the disaster from news reports there he immediately called his son, Gil, another Anderson fireman, in Cincinnati to see if everything was OK here. Luckily, the east side of town was spared the twister that hit the Western part of Cincinnati.As has been the case in other recent disasters in the Cincinnati area there was a good deal of outpouring of help and comfort to the victims. We were glad to see government officials try and cut red tape in efforts o' to get fast relief for victims of the disaster.For at least one newsman, Greg Hand, editor of the Western Hills Press, the tornado made for an exciting Saturday.Hand had to be at St. Catharine Church in the wedding of his brother, Mark, by 10:30 a.m. that fateful Saturday. vThe Civil Defense sirens sounded an hour before' he planned, to' rise.“Not yet aware that a tornado was turning homes to matchwood just minutes from my apartment, I buried my head in the pillows hoping it was a false alarm.*’Then he got a call about the tornado on Seville Ct, His wife shouted “There’s a tornado’’ to him. He got out of bed, unloaded the color film he had in the camera for the wedding and put in black and white and drive off wondering where the street was. He had never heard of Seville Ct,site to spell Greg,Hand made it to the wedding. “The sun came out and Greg stoodin his tux posing for photos in the sunshine, thinking “At least they’ve got good weather for cleaning up.”In case you haven’t looked outside lately, the trees are beginning to turn their colors. Height of the color for trees is expected to be this weekend. Hopecompared to 16 days recorded in 1974.
