Might children of Mr. and Mrs Stephen Gantert made the family home at 04 Main St, a social center during one of La Crosse’s most interesting eras, the eight Mary, Louise, Stephen Henry, So phia, Josephine, John George, rank Albert and Alelen, Mary be came Mrs. William Schuster, Low ise is the wife of C. J. Ross, Sophia was r married to Atty. John Pr. Kennedy, St. Paul, and Helen became Mrs. Julius Weisssenber ger. Only three are now living Louise, Sophia and Helen. Both Gantert and his wife, the former Sophia Waener, were born in Schwaregwald, Bavaria, but they were married here at St. Mary's Catholic Church. This was in the early 60's when the church was a white frame building on the northeast corner of Seventh and Cameron. Gantert built a two story brick home on the south west of that corner, the home still startling. But he was expanding his furni ture business at the same time. His first store was only the south third of the present Gantert es tablishment. He bought two empty lots to the north of it from G. C Hixon and built what the family always referred to as “the dou ble store Desiring to build a second and larger home, the pioneer bought lots at the southeast corner of 1th and Main Ste Oet. 1, 1886. He chose as his architect, Staley and Schick, also pioneers here, and took them to St. Paul to look over a home he admired. It became a model for the home he put up, but was hot copied. The Gantert home was the sec ond in the block between King and JOHN GEORGE HEAREN Main on 13th. Only one there when he built was the two story red brick residence of the stew. Cald well, Presbyterian minister, it later became Dr. Edward Evane’ home and now belongs to Avons t rams. First fund transfer recorded in the abstract is that of the State of Wisconsin the P. M. Rublee and S. T. Smith Oct, 24, 1861, Gantert tonight the lots from Mons and Jane Anderson Oct, 1, 1886 and no doubt spent some years fash ioning the home he wanted. The family probably moved from Sev enth and Cameron in the early FRANK ALHERT § HENRY Ce. Ground to the east of the home became a tenure court for the Gantert children and their friends and one of the towers made an ideal playroom. A devoted Catholic, Gantert dae Noted one of three chimes for St. Joseph's Cathedral when it was erected in 1869, it was named ‘Stephen in his honor and still rings out in his memory.
