Other Curious Acts of Rodents Discovered in Weekly Inspection Tour. In these solemn war times, when lux ury among the semi-prosperous folk of the grand old U.S. A. is tabooed and many of the formerly money-free people of the land are hoarding their nickels and dimes as never before, it remains for the nefarious and purloining rodent, known as the rat, with his hated cunning and ability to avoid traps to a nicety with a garnished repast, to teach all of us a simple lesson in economy that cannot fail to reach the very depths of our reason ing tank. During the past week while BP Engi neer R. P. Du Valle was making his cus tomary rounds among his corps of rat proofing inspectors, a case was called to his attention by Inspector C. O. Bell which has caused the former to consume three writing tablets in trying to figure out how it could be “‘did.” In the building formerly occupied by the Muscat-Lott Produce Company, on North Commerce street, a nest of rats was nicely padded with the remnants of United States currency totalling in all $35. Originally there had been three of the bills—one $10 note, one $20 note and a five spot, which had been nibbled to shreds. Another peculiar case discovered dur ing the week's work of inspection was that at St. John Co., millers, 68 St. Louis street. Concrete recently placed for the purpose of rat-proofing the building was found to have been eaten into to a depth of nearly four inches. At the J. J. Blacksher building at 9 St. Francis street, occupied by the Southern Seed store, a concrete wall now being built to shut out the wily rat, was at tacked by one or more of the despised germ-totors and a large hole bored through the framework. Health Officer Dr. Mohr and Engineer Du Valle inspected many stables during the past week to determine how many, if any, were in vion of the city or dinance passed by commission last Tuesday. Many were not not to con form to the ordinance, and instructions were given to the owners to rat-proof them. Engineer Du Valle stated Saturday that the most complete rat -proofed building he had seen in Mobile that recently onstructed at 2108.
