As the major league season heads into the final weeks of play, the sound of college base ball returns to Kobernot Field as the Sul Ross Lobo baseball team takes the field against Howard College in scrimmage action Friday and Saturday. Sul Ross head Coach Byron Brooks will unveil his 1985-1986 Lobos for two days of action in order to evaluate the 38 potential players for the coming season. Brooks said, ‘These scrimmages will help us evaluate our progress and our players against good competition.” The Lobos have been competing in intersquad scrim mages for the past month, some times scrimmaging three games a week. There will be a number of new faces on the Sul Ross diamond as 26 new players try for a spot on the field. Five of the players were redshirts from last season and six more have college experience. Joining the Lobos from the college ranks will be Scott Sulser, a catcher from Paris Junior College; Dennis Taylor, a pitcher also from PJC; Rod Venner, a third baseman from Ranger Junior College; Kip Woodfin, an outfielder from El Reno College; Buck White, a pitcher from Hill College; and Jimmy Morris, a transfer from Lubbock Christian College. Several familiar faces from last year’s squad are back to add depth and experience to the Sul Russ line-up. Changing from outfield to first base will be versa tile Tuti Moreno, an El Paso junior. Midland junior Judd Ryan returns to the Lobo line-up at second base. Last season’s leading hitter for the Lobos, Eddie Duarte, a Fort Stockton senior, will return to outfield for Sul Ross. Other returning lettermen for Sul Ross will be Jeff Parnell, Bob Jarrett, Raul Benavides, Rowdy Brown, Johnny Guerrero, Russell McGuairt, John Bowman, Harvey Portwood and Junior Sena. Brown, Guerrero, Portwood and Sena are all pitchers who will be working along with several top recruits. The Sul Ross pitching staff currently has 16 players bidding for the starting rotation and relief spots. Assistant coaches this season for the Lobos will be Tom Chandler Jr. and Calvin King. Brooks will be taking a look at all of his players in this weekend’s action against the Hawks. The Sul Ross and Howard teams will play at least 12 innings both days to insure plenty of game-like action. The action is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday and will resume Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kokernot Field. There is no admission charge for the scrimmages.
