Volume XXIII.; Tommy Dorsey And Party Pay Surprise Visit To WesternCadets Are Charmed By Music Of Peerless Leader And His CompanyThe afternoon of October 3 was a red-letter day on Western’s calendar. The nationally famous orchestra leader, Tommy Dorsey, visited the school, bringing with him his pianist, the Pied Pipers, and his vocalist, Frank Sinatra. Cadets were dismissed from class in order to hear this surprise prog mm.The famous trombone slid into its master’s theme song, “I’m Getting ■ Sentimental Over You.” Even with i only the piano accompaniment, the mellow notes were easily recognized as those of the top trombonist of the country. Frank Sinatra gave a romantic vocal interpretation of “Only Forever,” and repeated this number by request at the end of the program. The Pied Pipers The Pied Pipers, including a very pretty girl, sang “I’ll Never Smile Again,” with beautiful effects added by Frank Sinatra, the pianist, and Tommy Dorsey’s trombone. Then by request they sang “Marie,” “Maybe,” and “What Can I Do, Dear, After I Say I’m Sorry.” As a closing number, the Pipers and Sinatra sang “The One You Love Won’t Love Back.”The music was unbelievably smooth and lovely. Tommy Dorsey can make his trombone Speak in tones soft and sweet. The rhythm of the dance numbers caused leg muscles to twitch in sympathy. There was music that the cadets loved, as their waves of applause testified.Tommy Dorsey’s orchestra was fill-f ing a week’s engagement at the St.Louis Horse Show, where they were a great hit. They had made the rounds of a few private schools in St. Louis, i Although Alton is a good 45-minutedrive away, Dorsey and his group consented to include Western, at the request of Mr. Harvey Beffa, head of the Sit. Louis Shriners, who were sponsoring the horse show. Col. Jackson introduced Mr. Beffa, who in turn presented Tommy Dorsey. The opportunity of hearing this top-ranking musician and his entertainers will not soon be forgotten by the cadets of Western.
