Late Saturday afternoon the Board of Health met in special meeting to discuss the smallpox epidemic which is said to have threatened this city. The meeting was held in the office of Mayor Prophet in the City hall and was attended by the mayor, Health Officer Dr. F. L. Landick and Messrs. Fisk, Stolzenbach, Harley and Lin derman. The meeting was called by Dr. Landick, who stated that they had met for the purpose of taking actions relative to protecting the city again tt the towns infected with smallpox, the disease being epidemic in St Maury Lake View, New Hampshire, Uniopo lis and Wapakoneta; and, although the cases were mild at the present time, cold weather would have a ten dency to cause the malady to develop in its Worst stages, and precautionary , methods for that reason should te tuk je immediately to stamp out the disease, if possible, if it should make its appearance in the city. The doctor stated furthermore that there were no cases of smallpox, diphtheria or scarlet flever dn the city, but that Mr. Bacome, of whom Tur News has made men ition, had been exposed to the disease ,and it might result in a case of the dreaded smallpox. He understood that Lueis Blank, who has the disease at Umiopolis, had feed to spread it for some hideous reason, and, as a result, the whole populace of Uniopolis was threatened. The board discussed the matter at length. Secretary Probst report ed 36 cases at Wapakoneta: five at St. Marys, and one in the country north of there, one case at Uniopolis and one at Waynesield. Smallpox had been at Wapakoneta since May, but was thought to be chickenpox until Secretary Probst and Dr. Whittaker, of Cincinnati, had ex amined the cases and it developed that the disease was smallpox. It was not thought advisable to quarantine any of the towns, but bucksters, etc., be tween Uniopolis and Waynesfield and this city will be made to cease their trips. Owing to the tightedness of of Lima on the Sabbath it restiznted that be tween 100 and 200 people spend the day in Wapakoneta. It would be a wise policy for these visits to beeing continued until all danger had passed. The board decied that the health officer notify the board of education .o after all pupils who were never vnc. Baldor those who have not been within the past four years and those who could not produce a physician's certificate for the same, be vaccinated at once. Mr. Harley said the question was Serious 10 contemplate and thought that it behooved every citizen of Lima to Use every precautionary effort to keep the disease from infecting this city. He made a motion to this effect jand at was carried unamimonely. The board then adjourned, after deciding ‘that in the event that the pestilence ‘continued to spread, a quarantine would be placed against the infected districts. ‘The matter is certainly a consequen tial one, and with sixteen cases of the ‘terrible diseas in Wapakoneta and the schools and churches closed as a result, the position of Lima is most precarious.
