A young minister of the Wesleyan church in England, receiving his first appointment to the circuit including the town of Madely,at that time favor ed with the ministerial labors of Rev. John Fletcher, he was directed,on rea ching Madely, to inquire for Mr. F.’s residence. On riding up to the house he called or knocked, when an elderly servant, as he supposed, in ordinary clothing, met the summons. “Is this Mr. Bletcher’s residence??? “It is, sir.’’ “My name is , the junior preacher for this circuit.” “Yes, sir, the family have been ex pecting you; dismount and walk in.” “No, my man; I make it an invorable rule to see my horse attended to first; take him to the stable, take your curry couch and brush and curry him down.’ The old man, in compliance with his directions, performed the duties of a hostler. “Now give him provender, and I’ll go into the house.” “Walk in, sir; take a seat.” Looking round, and seeing no one but the old hostler, he inquired— “Where is Mr. Fletcher?” “I am Mr. Fletcher.” His surprise and mortification can be better imagined than described, but the excellent Fletcher told him not to dis tress himself, not infer that because a man wears musty clothes at home he must be hostier. ‘Reaicioy is like the firmament; the more one searches it the more stars are seen; it is like the sea; the more one views it the more boundless it ap pears. Our aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think; rather to improve our minds, 60 as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with the thoughts of other men. Caro said, “The best way to keep good acts in memory, is to retreat them with new.” :
