The Methodist preachers in conference assembled in Indianapolis not long ago requested the prayers of the members ill behalf of poor Brother Hinshaw, then on trial in Danville, Ind., for the murder of his wife. This was all right, of course, for a man is always presumed to be innocent until he is proved guilty. It would have been all right had it been definitely known then that conviction was certain, for Hinshaw guilty is infinitely poorer than Hinshaw innocent and infinitely more in need of ferved prayers. On the theory, always open* to argument, that all men are brothers, it was also all right to call the accused “brother,11 still in the light of Wednesday’s finding of the jury at Danville th endearing fraternal term as a handle to the convicted wife-murder-ers name jars the vocal chords, much as an unseen nail jars the teetli of a ripping saw. The conviction of this murderer is almost unanimously indorsed in Indiana. A startling feature of the developments on Wednesday was the fact that among the old farmers who had quietly organized a vigilance committee proposing to hang Hinshaw in case an acquittal, were the identical men who had dramatically seized and torn up the warrant which the detective originally brought for Hinshaw’s arrest. No more vivid illustration could be offered of a revolution in public sentiment wrought by the trial of this perfidious man.—[Cincinnati Times Star.
