Death of James Cleary.James Cleary. a pioneer of Minneapolis. died Wednesday night at Ids home. 770 Selby avenue, St. raid, after ten days’ illness, from pneumonia. He came to the state in 1855 and had lived in St. Paul since 18«M1. He was well known in the city and was identified with its development in the early days. Though seventy-five years old he took an active interest in public affairs and at the primary election last month was chosen as one of the Democratic nominees for county commissioner. He was born in 1820 at Dun-kerrin. Kings county, Ireland, and came to America in 1840. Coming to Minnesota in 1855 he settled in Le Sueur county. During the Sioux uprising in 1802 he was among the pioneers who went to the defense of New lTlm. He served in the Minnesota rangers, under Capt. Cox. of Company E, until the redskins were pacified and the farmers and villagers were able to return to their homes. Mr. Cleary came to St. Paul in 18dti and engaged in the coal and wood business, with which he was connected up to the time of his death. He occupied a small office at 01 West Third street, next door to the Central police station. He was a familiar figure about the city streets and was acquainted with a large number of people. He became a member of the volunteer fire department on Ids arrival in this city, and he remained with that organization until it was replaced by the paid department. Thirty years ago lie was alderman of what is now the Fifth ward. He Is survived by his wife and daughter. Miss Alice Cleary. They were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Cleary’s illness. though not at first thought serious, compelled him to leave his business two weeks ago. lie had never been sick before and believed that lie would recover within a few days, lie sank gradually, however, and Wednesday his death occurred.Few Paupers in Catholic Belgium. 1It Is the fashion of the* present
