The report spread like wild fire and a thousand rumors flew over the city. It j was reported that Ed Forrester, man a-1 ger of the county convicts, had been I brained with a rock hurled by Comino- ; dore Miller and then shot with his own pistol. Little knots of angiy and excited men gathered on the street corners and denounced Commodore in savage terms, lie was branded as a rape-fiend, a robber of the boldest type, a murderer and black hearted fiend. The excited citizens also denounced other parties whom they accused of saving the neck of Commodore Miller in days gone by. Will Forrester, a guard at the quarries near Eagle Ford, came to tbe city for assistance to run down and capture Commodore Miller and twelve other convicts who made their escape at 9 o'clock Monday. The facts in the case are as follows:Ed Forrester, manager of the county convicts, hail been working Commodore Miller and twelve other prisoners in the quarries near Eagle Ford. Will Forrester had been assisting him as a guard. Will was sitting on the bank, shot gnu in hand, when a rock came whizzing along and knocked him flat. At the sani© instant his brother in the pit was knocked down. Both men were overpowered and disarmed. Commodore appropriated the double-barreled shot-gun and pistols to his owu use and fled, followed by bis companions. Neither of the guards are badly injured.Sheriff Lewis and his deputies at once started in pursuit of the fugitives. A posse of police officers and another posse of citizens headed by Constable Morton and Ford House also secured horses and putting spurs to them, rode away in the direction of Eagle Ford. Two months ago Commodore Miller was convicted yi the county court of carrying coucealed weapons and fined $200 and costs, and given a jail sentence. Judge Bower warned the guards that Commodore Miller was a desperate man, and ordered them to keep the ball and chain on him at all times. Commodore behaved himself, won the confidence of the Forresters and the irons, it is said, were removed. He is armed to the teeth and,a bloody fight is sure to follow if he is surrounded by the officers on his trail.Chicago, Sept. :bly go up a notch i While no official n« been received by It gert on good aafcho of the Reading cor held the first of the vance prices 2o cei will make the cost and will necessitate price to $7.50.Even at the prese snmers are beginni: softcoal, and this d as the price of anthOilmotSt. Louis, Sept.
