Wreck of 8.8. fiingowan in the DIy River.Thb steamer Rlangowan Arrived at Port Darwin from Sydney on Saturday, On 10th September, haring made a fair pamage from the latter port. The captain was accompanied by Mr. Howard, not aa a pilot, but simply to point out any difficult portions of the river, he having made several bait tripe np it. On the following morning they reached the month of the river, and on the neat day grounded on a sand bank. While she was on the bank Mr. Owston came down in his cotter, being on his way to Darwin for supplies, and being told the vessel had been sent out fur the use of the plantation he went on hoard. The captain inquired if he could get up the river, aad waa assured by Mr. Owstoo he could. Started the following day at high water, Mr. Owston remaining on hard, but the vernal grounded an frequently that the captain and anothsr had to take the dingy aad go ahead; tney ultimately reached their destination. They left again on the 28th, and after proceeding about seven miles she struck ou a reef or ber running across the river; the veeeel went nearly over it, leaving her bows afloat. The anchor was taken out ahead, and hawsers run ashore aad made fast, in preparation for the bore which rises in this river during the spring tides, but when it came rushing up it broke away all the fastenings as 3 they were pack thread, and swept the vessel off the ber into deep water, when she filled and sank almost immedmtely, all hands getting safely ashore. Mr. Owston, accompanied by Howard, relumed overland to the plantation, avid brought down the cutter to save anything that could bo got out of her. They than made for Port Darwin, and arrived on Tuesday morning about 1 a.m. Aa an inquiry will probably be instituted, we forbear saying more on the subject.
