PUGILISM AHD MOBBING-The readers of newspapers at this era oflt;*the world are disgusted with the continual accounts of broils and buttles, fights and mobs, arson and murder, bloodshed and riots, as well as the lesser crimes and evils which abound. The heaps of fraud and villainy that are held up to the public gaze has produced a distempered public spirt and a vitiated taste, which will, unless it be checked at an early day, result in a serious bane to society,'and may eventually subvert our institutions. For this reason as a public journalist, we liave refrained from the exposition of many villainies, that we at least might be free from the charge of building up and feeding a vitiated taste. But we recently have observed a spirit of pugilism and mobbing growing up around'us, with its attendant detrimental influences, which need a check tliroWn upon it. And whatever we can do to put a stop to these things shall be done willingly and “according to law.”For the last few months, there hasbeen a deal of gambling, drinking, rousing, and other vices, going on in and about this town, which perhaps the public know but little about. Often blackguarding, swearing, hideous noises, demon-like yells, and libertine conduct generally are perpetrated upon our public streets, between 10 o’clock and daylight, by boys and young men. These young candidates for mischief, crime and misery, disturb the quiet and' peace of our citizens with impunity. Shall this continue to be so?The consequence of this general bad conduct is leaking out in special acts of cowardice and brutality. Fights are frequent. Quarrels and hard words arc more frequent. And mobs, solid masses of brutality and cowardice, are getting to be common. By-and-by, a mob will do an irreparable wroDg, unless their demonstrations are nipped in the bud.Quite recently, an armed mob of young “plug-uglies,” “mug-smashers,” “ripraps,” and “tigers,” congregated at the tank, and whilst there upon business one of our substantial citizens who has lived here from boyhood, was stricken down by a blow upon the back of the head and beaten, by a boy about eighteen years old. We know not and we eare not what it was done for; it was brutal and cowardly. Those who encouraged, smiled upon, and abetted this boy in his deadly assault upon John Hyatt are indeed brought low in their malice and envy. Will onr citizens long permit rowdies and mobs' of uncouth, uncultivated boys and young men thus to perpetrate outrages? We shall sec.
