Sophie C. Cordova, 66, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 2, after suffering a stroke while visiting at the home of her daughter, Jane Moncayo, in Santa Rosa. Mrs. Cordova was born February 14, 1916, in Encino to Macario Chavez and Juanita Tenorio Chavez, both now deceased. She grew up on the family ranch at Palma. Funeral mass was held Tuesday morning, October 5, at Saint Rose of Lima Church, with Reverend Father Walter Cassidy serving as celebrant. A song entitled ‘‘Para Ti Mama” writ ten by Bugui Medina from Paraguay was sung by Mrs. Cordova’s son-in-law, Al Gomez, during the mass. Mrs. Cordova is survived by her husband, Justiniano Cordova of Santa Rosa; two sons, Alfonso Cordova and Justo (Sonny) Cordova, both of Santa Fe; three daughters, Mrs. Margie Lopez of Los Lunas, Mrs. Betty Gomez and Mrs. Jane Moncayo, both of Santa Rosa; two bro thers, Demecio Chavez of Santa Rosa and Max Chavez of Albuquerque; two sisters, Mrs. Isabel Chavez of Santa Fe and Mrs. Raime Atencio of Albuquerque; 22 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; one aunt, Mrs. Angelita Perez of Encino, and many other relatives and friends. Burial was in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Santa Rosa. Pallbearers were her grandsons, David Cordova, Mark Gomez, Jeff Cordova, Darrel Gomez, Tony Moncayo, Sonny Lopez and Ricky Garcia. Johnson-Chavez Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
