In rolling and steep areas like Hocking County, where grass is plentiful, the primary livestock en terpise is beef brood cows, with the calves being sold at weaning weights to be fattened in areas where feed grains are more availabe. The Hockhocking River, as the Hocking River was known by the Delaware Indians, played an im portant part in the settlement of the area. A canoe was used to bring in the first white settlers, Christian Westenhaver and his family, in 1778. In more recent years, canoeing down the scenic Hocking River has become a favorite past-time of many Hocking County residents.
