Many Hurley fans witnessed the nip and tuck battle at Ironwood Sunday when Ashland was defeated 7 to o. The teams* seemed to be about evenly matched and it should have been a battle to delight the heart of the most ardent football fan. But the numerous delays, rag chewing and arguments with the referee and the length of time it took to play the game took away considerable of the pleasure of being a witness. A number of penalties were inflicted on account of “rough stuff/’ with Ashland getting the bigger share of them. The i fact that Ashland was penalized 15 yards for their fullback’s alleged roughing of Hansen spoiled the visitor’s best chance of scoring and j threatened to break the game up in a row. Ashland worked the ball to within a short distance of their goal ! after the second half started and hut for thepenalty probably would have put the hall over. It was the only I part of the game in which Ashland showed any superiority, most of j the time being on the defensive,; When Ashland fumbled the hall on the 20 yard line it paved the way for Ironwood s only touchdown, two forward passes, in which Pufall, Hansen and Marshall figured, putting the hall over. The star performers for Ironwood were j Hansen and Marshall, former Minnesota university players. With* Iout these men Ironwood no doubt would have gone down to defeat. Marshall was a consistent ground gainer and showed up well in the i forward passes. v 1
