FRESHMEN DEFEAT SOPHOMORES AFTER 15 MINUTES OF FIGHTINGThrilling Cane Rush On Beaver Field Tests Metal of Classes.SOPHS BADLY OUTNUMBEREDFresliies Are Knuhleil to Tie and Carry Them Out of the Fight. After the usual preliminary skirmishing, president-stealing, and expulsion of hot air, the real battle between the freshies and sophs occurred last Thursday afternoon, resulting in an unconditional victory for the frehmen class of 1912. Dr. Hunt’s announcement in chapel of a half holiday was greeted with delight and a good sized crowd of students and townspeople was present cn Beaver Field long before the hour scheduled for the cane rush.Much speculation Lad been indulged in relative to the probable outcome of the contest. It was known that the entering students far oui-number the Sophs, but superior organization was by many expected to compensate the Sophs for the difference in numbers. Then, too, the Sophs according to custom were given the possession of the cane at the beginning of the fight, and this was conceded fo be of great value to that class. The hhsh was conducted in much the same manner as it has been formerly. A line was drawn in the middle of the field. Ten yards on either side of this line were drawn up the opposing forces. At a signal the two classes were to rush towards each other, each attempting to carry the cane into the opponents territory. At the end of 15 minutes the contest would be decided in favor of the class is whose territory the cane was no* found. The Fresies formed on the south side of the line. A formidable array they appeared to be with their army of 68. But a glance at the north end of the field was sufficient to convince lhe spectators that air the fighting men were not on one side. Although the Sophs numbered only 39, still some of the best fighters were seen in their ranks. They came forward to the ten yard line, President White holding the cane.At 2:15, Dr. Hunt extended his handkerchief and dropped it, and the battle was on. The tricky Sophs, instead of using a straight buck, swerved suddenly to the left. The move served to carry the cane some distance over the line, but the Freshmen were into the fight in a trice. From that moment things happened in rapid succession. It was a fight of more than passing interest and presented many humorous scenes. The numbers of the Freshman class soon told on the Sophs however, ■and it was not long until the new men were in possession of the cane. It was an easy matter wi*h their big numbers to tie the Sophs one at a time and then dispose of the cane at will. Not a quitter was found on either side. At the expiration o f the allotted time, 15 minutes, the majority cf both classes was ready to quit. When the cane was found to have travelled considerable distance into the Sophomores territory an exultant cheer went up from the Freshmen, and they made their way. speedily *o the cups of hot coffee, which, owing to the hospitality of the Freshman girls, were awaiting them. The Sophomore girls very loyally gave up their wagon to one of the ’11 boys who had suffered a lit*le more severely than some of his classmates at the hands of his antagonists.“The Little 11111.“-x-Candy made fresh every day at Casey’s.
