Destructive Fires.—On Wednesday last, soon after seven o’clock in the evening, a fire broke out at a lucifer-match factory belonging to Mr. Seagar, situate in Sale-street, Bethnal-green-road. It arose from the over-heating of the drying-room, wherein several thousand gross of congreves were deposited, which exploded with a loud noise, creating much confusion in the neighbourhood, more particularly as the destruction of the whole of the premises seemed certain. However, by the promptitude displayed by the inhabitants, and a good supply of water being at hand, the fire was in a short time got under, not until the factory had sustained considerable injury. The factory is insured.— Thursday morning, shortly before five* a fire, which threatened the destruction of an extensive range of valuable property, broke out in the third story of the sugar manufactory of Messrs. Martineau and Co., Broadway, Goulston-slreet, Whitechapel. The *building is large, and the stock was considerable. City policeman 672 sent information to the fire stations, and several engines soon arrived, and fortunately the fire was extinguished without igniting r.ny other portion of the property. It is said that the fire—which, had it caught the sugar stores, might have swept away the whole neighbourhood of Rose-lane — arose from the overheating of the boiler flue. The damage done is inconsiderable.
