Va., often do not realize they are driving by a bit of history. Behind the old, massive, strongly constructed home are many interesting.historic factslinked to this part of West Virginia.The old house is known as the Sloah-Parker home and was .constructed in 1790, but the . original owner, Richard Sloan traveled a rocky road from his native Ireland until he and his wife built their home which is about seven miles west of' Romney on U.S. Route 50.Richard Sloan sailed from his home , in Monagan County, ' .Ireland to the new land,• % i » •... America. He booked passage onthe first passenger vessel to sailhere from England following the Revolutionary War. He paid his fare before embarking, but. at the end of the trip, the fare was demanded again.Unable to pay, he was sold to a David Van Horn as an indentured servant. In some way, the chemistry between Sloan and 'Van Horn's daughter seemed to be just right and he ran away with Charlotte Van Horn.The young couple went , to Baltimore. While there, they saw some very fine, fat cattle and inquired from where the cattle had come. Their inquiry revealed that the stock hadoriginated in Hardy County in what Is now the Old Fields, W. Va., area. The young coiipie decided that was the place forthem.So, the journey began and they finally arrived at Romney where they settled down for a period of time. They later moved to the present location of the Stone House and built that home.In that era of our nation's history, building was done slowly and meticulously. The stones were engaged and the laborers who quarried the stone for the house received the fabulous wage of six and’ a fourth cents per day. That was regarded as excellent pay for laborers.The Irish emigrant, Richard Sloan, was a.weaver by tradeCLARKSBURG, W. Va. He married Magdaline Arnold January 6, 1834.Richard Sloan and Charlotte Van Horn Sloan are buried in a family cemetery in sight of the Stone House. Richard was born 1773, died 1837.On December 29, 1854, the Parker brothers! John Peyton, Benjamin and William, bought the old stone home and 900project on the New River at Galax, Va.The state of North Carolina has led opposition to the long-sought project, but Vaughan said of Blue Ridge: “We think this represents the ultimate in efficient production of electricity, and we think the users of electricity in wide section of the country would suffer if it isn’thiiMt ’»acres from the Sloan brothers.Benjamin Parker married Belle Parker and they had two sons, Renick Seymour and John Henry. Renick.died at age 27 and John Henry married Eleanor DuBois Johnson. Eleanor added a frame addition to the house.
