By JAY SHELLECY Coach Ivan Schottel’s St. Ben edict’s College Ravens will be seeking their first win of the 1961 grid season tomorrow night as they play host to the Bears of Springfield State at Amelia Ear hart field. Not only will the St. Benedict’s club be looking for the initial victory but they have also yet to score a point. Springfield went down to a 22-0 defeat last year at the hands of the Atchison CIC champs who in vaded the Bruins ground and took full advantage of the Bears inex perience and youth. Bear mentor, Orville Pottenger, is counting heavily on the return ing vets of last season, but ex pressed at the beginning of this season the thought that he couldn’t see a single game Spring field could win. As events show, his prediction was wrong. So far his record shows a win, loss, and a tie. As generally expected they dropped their first game 1-4 to the highly rated Pittsburg State, but turned around the following week to top Emporia State, 19-12. Their most recent game with Missouri Valley, another strong club, was a 7-7 deadlock. The Schottel men have had long practices this week to put them in prime condition for tomorrow's tussle as a win or loss would have a great moral effect on the team in either way. Two injuries have cropped up during the practice to key men. Dale Conrardy sprained an ankle last week which kept him out of the Cape Girardeau contest, and this week Dave Herne cracked a rib. It is not known at this time whether either will be in the starting lineup. Except for the outcome of the two injured starters, Schottel will probably go with the same start ers he used in the Cape game The Raven offensive will be as follows: Ends: Dennis Cawley, 195, Sr., Dave Herne, 190, Sr., (Don O'Con nor, 185, Jr.), Tackles: Gerry Wichman, 215, Sr., Larry Kaminsky, 220, Jr Guards: Ken Dreiling, 215, Soph., Fred Wiese, 220, Soph. Center: Bill Maus, 225, Jr. Halfbacks: Ron Lewis, 180, Sr., Dale Conrardy, 190, Jr., (Herman Hutchinson, 205, Soph.) Quarterback: Glenn Hornung 210, Soph. Fullback: John McGlinn, 210, Sr. The offensive lineup for the Springfield Bruins will be as follows: Ends: Neil Smith, 184, Soph., Jerry Lazenby, 157, Jr. Tackles: Al Cummins, 215, Sr., Larry Sidwell, 195, Freshman. Guards: Richard Johnningmeir 218, Soph., Bill Howell, 194, Sr. Center: Harry Braun, 205, Jr Halfbacks: Ron Sharp, 170 Soph., Dick Davis, 170, Soph. _ Quarterback: Ed Stracke, 170 Jr. Fullback: Geerst Sample, 185, Jr. The average weight for the Raven line is 211.4 pounds and the backfield weighs in at 197.5. This compares to the Bear's 195.4 average weight on the line and a near 174 for the backs. DIRECTING RAVEN play against Springfield here tomorrow night will be Glenn Hornung, 6-3 and 210-pound sophomore quarterback from Spearville, Kas. St. Benedict’s will be going into the game with two losses. The Ravens also will be seeking their first touchdown of the season against Springfield. DON O'CONNOR, 6-1 and 185 pounds from Cameron, Mo., may start in place of Dave Herne at one of the end positions for the Ravens tomorrow night. Herne, regular starter, is nursing a cracked nib. O'Connor is a junior letterman.
