October 4.—The Italian steamer Citta di Palermo, bound for New Orleans, with a valuable cargo from Italy, lies stranded on the Diamond Shoal, one mile from Cape Hatteras life saving station and wrecking tugs have gone to her assistance. The vessel is commanded by Captain Massardo and had touched at New York. Baltimore and Norfolk to discharge part of her lading. The vessel went ashore at 9:30 o’clock last night during thick weather. and the crew ot thirty men were landed in life boats today, by life saving crews from CapeHatteras and Creeds Hills stations The reports .received during the day from the stranded ship indicated that the vessel is in good condition and while still hard aground no immediate fears were felt for the ship.No details additional to those received during the dov reached Norfolk tonight. The wreck was due to a mistake in taking the Cape Hatteras lights for the Diamond Shoals lightship.
